Southern La Jolla’s Bird Rock neighborhood is located on a rocky stretch of beach overlooking reefs and coves with a mix of million-dollar homes, 1950s-era beach cottages, and condominium developments. Bird Rock is named for “The Bird Rock,” a small sandstone island off the shoreline that is regularly populated with sunbathing pelicans and black cormorants. A trolley line that ran from downtown San Diego to La Jolla ceased operation in the 1940s, but the right-of-way still exists in Bird Rock today and is used by cyclists and pedestrians as the Fay Avenue Bike Path.

Currently in the midst of a major redevelopment effort, Bird Rock also includes a mile-long shopping district along La Jolla Boulevard populated mostly by locally-owned shops: boutiques, restaurants, salons, coffee shops, and yoga and pilates studios, among others.

Bird Rock is also a popular surf spot known for two main regions, “North Rock” and “South Rock.” Bird Rock is also well-known for its traffic “roundabouts,” intersections where cars may (carefully) yield without stopping.
